History of McGoey Bros. Insurance
|
In 1920 P.A. bought the building at 10 Mill St. E. (The Company’s present location) which had previously been a bank ad a post office. He lived there with his family and operated the business from a single room. Tom and Bernard were born there. He had customers within a 30 mile radius of Tottenham and would often be out on the road by 6 a.m. to reach farmers before they went out into the fields as few had telephones.
Until the 1940’s very little automobile insurance was sold. It did not become compulsory until 1980. After World War II Thomas V. McGoey joined his father in the business which was known as P.A. McGoey & Son Insurance Agency. Later Bernard joined the business. Peter died in 1965 at the age of 88. The office expanded to use the whole ground floor of the building.
In 1981 Tom’s son Tod joined the business. An addition was added to the west side of the building. At that time there were 6 employees. In 1985 Bernard’s son Michael joined the business.
In 1990 the business was incorporated as McGoey Brothers Insurance Ltd. 1992 saw another addition on the rear of the building.
In April of 2000 Bernard died. Later that year in August Thomas Died.
In January 2002 the entire upstairs was taken over to add room for business operations. Today we have 18 employees and sell all types of insurance and financial services.
We are able to boast that we still serve many fourth and fifth generation customers.
